Gulliver's Travels tells the story of Gulliver, a sailor, who washes up on the beach of an island named Lilliput after his ship sinks in a storm. It is soon revealed that the inhabitants of both Lilliput and the neighboring island of Belfuscu are tiny people. They capture the unconscious Gulliver, thinking that he might attack the island. He soon breaks free and must try to stop a war from breaking out between Lilliput and Belfuscu. The problem intensifies when the opposing island's spies steal Gulliver's gun. Gulliver's Travels was released in 1939 by Paramount studios as an answer to Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film was directed by Dave Fleischer and produced for Fleischer Studios by Max Fleischer. The Fleischer brothers are well known for their creation of Popeye, Betty Boop, and other cartoon shorts. The film was based on the 18th century novel of the same name, which was written by Jonathan Swift. It was the second ever movie produced using cel-animation. It was also the first animated film to credit the voice actors. The film was produced on a tight schedule. It was made in little more than a year and required over 700 artists to animate the film in time for a 1939 Christmas release.
The film was a finical and critical success. It was so successful that another feature length film was released by Fleischer Studios called Mister Bug Goes to Town. This film, however, was to be the last produced by the studio as business and personal problems between Max and Dave Fleischer ended in the studio being absorbed by Paramount. Because Gulliver's Travels' copyright was not renewed, it has become public domain. That means it can be watched freely online legally. I have selected the best version that I could find. Enjoy!
